Latest NewsInfectious tracheobronchitis ('kennel cough')Vaccination:
As the bacteria sit right on the surface of the upper airways, a conventional vaccine triggering blood-borne immunity won't reach the infected area. To be effective, we need good local immunity directly at the site of infection. The same holds true for antibiotics used in the treatment of Bordetella infections. Although sensitive to a large number of antibiotics, these products often do not reach the bacteria at levels high enough to kill or inhibit the growth of the bacteria. Picture: Bordetella bronchiseptica (right). The vaccine contains a live strain of the Bordetella bacteria which has been modified to render it non disease causing. These bacteria, when sprayed up the nose, multiply and produce a solid local immunity that gives protection against infection. As non-disease causing bacteria are used in the vaccine in tiny doses, your dog CANNOT develop the disease from vaccination, nor is it infectious to other dogs.
