The care and treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs
and cats

If I see the symptoms listed here what should I do?

As with any health concerns the best course of action is to seek the professional opinion of your vet. They will give your pet a thorough check and will be able to identify which joints may be affected. Sometimes an x-ray will help quanitfy the damage within specific joints.

How will the osteoarthritis be treated?

Unfortunately there is no medical cure for osteoarthritis, however the quality of life of your pet can be greatly improved by combination of drugs, exercise and diet.

Your vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug. This acts as it sounds, by limiting the inflammation within and around the joint enabling the pet to move more freely.

There is a class of anti-inflammatory drugs called NSAID's (non steroidal anti-inflammatories). Many have been developed specifically for osteoarthritis to reduce pain and increase mobility without side affects previously associated with older products.
