Latest NewsEar DiseaseHow can I reduce the risks? There are a number of factors, which can increase the risk of your pet developing external ear disease. Firstly if a pet's ear/s contain a lot of wax and debris this can reduce the drainage of the ear/s and provides an ideal environment for bacteria and yeasts (that normally live within the ear) to grow, multiply and cause disease. If your pet (usually only dogs!) does a lot of swimming or is bathed a lot, water can remain in the ear canal. The moisture causes the skin within the ear canal to become damaged and allows bacteria and yeasts to infect and therefore lead to disease. It is important therefore to ensure your pet's ears remain dry. This can be achieved by ensuring that water isn't allowed to go into the ear canal when the animal is in the bath or if they are going swimming, using an ear cleaner, which will dry the ear canals once out of the water. If your dog has droopy ears or hairy or narrow ear canals then they are at an increased risk of developing external ear disease. These factors are difficult to correct. However regular cleaning of the ears can ensure that these risks are minimised. Using an effective ear cleaner can help to reduce or prevent all of the risk factors described above. Your vet will be able to advise you on a suitable cleaning regime for the maintenance of the health of your pet's ears. |
