The care and treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs
and cats

How can I tell if my pet has osteoarthritis?

Generally the condition is easy to identify, particularly if you are in close and regular contact with your pet. There are some easily recognisable symptoms that may indicate osteoarthritis and should certainly be drawn to the attention of your vet.

Look out for:

  • Signs that your pet is struggling to get up or has difficultly climbing stairs or steps
  • General lack of interest in exercise, resistance to being touched and lethargy
  • Stiff movement or an obvious limp which may be worse in cold weather
  • Continual gnawing or licking of an area of one of its limbs

In dogs there are parts of the body where osteoarthritis is more likely to occur.
